Why rent a car in Shkodra
Shkodra is northern Albania's cultural capital and the last real city before the mountains. Everything that makes the north extraordinary radiates from it: the road to Theth and the Grunas waterfall, the Koman ferry through fjord-like Lake Koman, Rozafa castle above the confluence of three rivers, the birdlife of Lake Shkodra, and two border crossings into Montenegro within half an hour. Public transport reaches almost none of it on a usable schedule. The city itself is Albania's cycling town — flat, relaxed, café-rich — which makes a rental car here a tool for day trips rather than city driving. What a rental car costs in Shkodra
Shkodra pricing tracks Tirana rather than the coast — no summer beach premium here. What is different is the mix: SUVs are a bigger share of the local fleet because of the Alps, and they book out first. Realistic 2026 rates:

Pickup logistics: hotel delivery, or drive up from Tirana
Shkodra's companies work on delivery, like the rest of the country: the car comes to your hotel or guesthouse for free or a €5–10 fee, the contract is signed at the car, and returns are a mirrored handover. The local fleet is smaller than the capital's, so for peak-summer SUV plans it is worth comparing a pickup in Tirana — the drive up the SH1 takes under two hours, and Tirana's bigger fleet means more choice at slightly lower prices. The best drives from Shkodra
Theth (~70 km, ~2.5 hours)
The signature drive of the Albanian north. The road climbs from Koplik through Boga, crests the Qafa e Thores pass, and drops into the stone-roofed village of Theth beneath the Accursed Mountains. It is fully asphalted now, but narrow, exposed and slow — go early, drive it in daylight, and treat GPS times as fiction. The Koman ferry (~35 km to Koman)
The morning ferry from Koman to Fierza threads a drowned river canyon that gets compared to Norwegian fjords — and for once the comparison holds. Drive the (rough, spectacular) road to the dam, take the car aboard the vehicle ferry for a through-route to Valbona and Kosovo, or ride as a foot passenger and return. Summer sailings fill up; book the car slot ahead.
Lake Shkodra, Shiroka and Zogaj (~10–15 km)
An easy evening loop: Rozafa castle at golden hour, then the lakeside road to Shiroka and the fishing village of Zogaj for carp and eel dinners facing Montenegro across the water. The lake also anchors the longer three lakes road trip.
Into Montenegro (~30 km to the border)
Ulcinj's beaches and the Bay of Kotor are day-trippable through the Muriqan crossing, with Hani i Hotit as the alternative toward Podgorica. Parking and driving in Shkodra
- Watch for bicycles. Shkodra has Albania's densest bike traffic, often unlit at dusk and serenely indifferent to cars. Give room, especially on the boulevard and around the pedestrianised Kolë Idromeno street.
- Parking is easy by Albanian standards — paid street parking in the centre, and most guesthouses have courtyards. Park outside the pedestrian zone and walk.
- Fuel up before the mountains. Stations are plentiful in town at €1.60–1.80/litre and essentially absent past Boga on the Theth road.
- Mountain rules: no night driving to Theth or Koman, add 30% to GPS estimates, and check conditions after heavy rain — the upper sections shed rocks.
