The best drives from Saranda

Ksamil (~15 km, 25 minutes)

The famous one. Three islets in swimming distance, water that photographs like the Caribbean, and beach bars shoulder to shoulder in August. Go before 9 am for parking and the water to yourself; by noon in peak season the village is full.

Butrint (~18 km, 30 minutes)

A UNESCO site layering Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian ruins into a forested peninsula with a lagoon on both sides. The Greek theatre and the lion gate justify the trip alone. Combine with Ksamil — they are ten minutes apart on the same road.

The Blue Eye (~22 km, 40 minutes)

Syri i Kaltër, a spring of impossible blue boiling up from more than 50 m below, sits just off the Gjirokastër road. Park at the gate and walk or take the shuttle down the lane. Cold water, big crowds at midday, magic in the early morning.

North up the Riviera (Borsh, Himara, Llogara)

The seafront crawls in August. The one-way loop around the bay jams from late afternoon. Park once and walk the promenade; do your driving before noon.
